Urge the Australian Government to Ban Scientific Research Experiments on Dogs
Scientific laboratories around Australia are killing thousands of dogs in experiments, according to a report in The Age.com.au The dogs used are mostly ex-racing greyhounds and beagles.
The University of Melbourne are alleged to have conducted some particularly cruel tests. The story states in one experiment, "four greyhounds underwent a series of operations to put screws in their skulls and electrodes into their brains.
"It is not known if they were later killed, but researchers reported they experienced discomfort for five days and one dog developed a large swelling of clotted blood from moving too much."
In another experiment, six greyhounds underwent dental implant surgery but were euthanised by lethal injection three months later. Once killed, the researchers removed the greyhounds jaws.
The story states: "Humane Research Australia has criticised the dental school in particular for abusing dogs for the sake of cosmetic surgery.Chief executive officer Helen Marston said she was shocked the university's animal ethics committee approved the dental implant research.
"The research was certainly not life-saving, as it was simply for human vanity," ... "The papers do not mention where the dogs were sourced from but we expect that they are 'wastage' from the racing industry."
Ms Marston said the anatomy of a dog's mouth is quite different to that of a human.
Dogs such as greyhounds and beagles deserve better! Will you join me in urging the Australian Government to end scientific research on dogs? Please sign and share the petition.

Battery hens lead a horrendous (and short life). Please read the information provided below provided by Animal Lib NSW, then please sign and share the attached petition.
How Battery hens Suffer...
Surgery without pain relief. De-beaking is a cruel procedure that farmers carry out to stop stressed, over-crowded hens pecking at each other. One third of the hen’s beak is cut off with a hot wire guillotine or an Infrared beak trimming machine without any kind of anaesthetic.
Many nerves exist in the beak, and these are cut or lasered through, resulting in extreme pain – and sometimes even death from shock. Hens may continue to experience pain for the rest of their lives, many having great difficulty eating.
Injury and illness. A battery cage is typically half the size of an average hen’s wingspan, yet houses 3-7 hens at any one time. The cage is made of wire, which cruelly cuts into hens’ feet. It can happen that, because there is no room for the hens to move inside the cage, their claws grow around the wire, resulting in them dying of starvation because they can’t reach the food. Dead birds can remain in the cage with live ones for days before a worker notices and removes the body.
Layer hens are prone to bone breakages. Their bones are brittle through over-production of eggs and lack of exercise. A high percentage of caged hens have osteoporosis, and research shows up to 56% suffer painful fractures.
Forced production In nature, hens moult in Autumn and are off-lay for 2-3 months to rest. Battery farmers, despite forced production being illegal, sometimes reduce this non-productive period by semi or total starvation of the hens, in order to bring them back on-lay more quickly. Many hens die during this process.
Lighting Programs Already over-bred for peak laying capacity, the hen's body is pushed further by lighting programs which stimulate her to lay even more eggs. Prolapse and tumours are common, as is acute calcium deficiency leading to "layer fatigue". This occurs when the hen's body can take no more and she finally collapses.

. The Masked Monkeys of Indonesia endure a lifetime of torment to provide tourist dollars for the monkey master.
Photograph by Ed Wray of a "masked" monkey having his/her body stretched to make it stand more like a human or doll, by the monkey master.
Another photograph by Ed Wray showing the terrible life suffered by the masked monkeys of Indonesia. Traditions of the past should be respected unless they are based on the torture and exploitation of innocent creatures.
Help stop the cruel trade of the "masked" monkeys of Indonesia... Please sign the petitions below, see the footage, and read the story of how these poor monkeys suffer due to gross human exploitation. (Article courtesy of Tony Zadel.)
Inside the cruel trade of the masked monkeys of Indonesia. Please sign and share these petitions widely. Thank you for assistance to save and protect these poor monkeys - **1. http://www.theperfectworld.com/petitions/item/40-the-masked-monkeys-of-indonesia **2. https://www.change.org/es/peticiones/exigimos-el-fin-del-uso-de-macacos-para-el-entretenimiento-publico **3. http://www.thepetitionsite.com/728/456/424/stop-masked-street-monkey-exploitation/ These poor monkeys often endure beatings, have their hands and limbs tied, and endure stifling heat and near suffocation with plastic dolls heads covering their faces to "entertain" the public and make money for the monkey masters. Ed Wray a famous photographer was terrified the first time he encountered a masked monkey. Having lived and worked in Jakarta as a freelance photographer for years, he was accustomed to seeing the animals, cruelly leashed by chains, jumping through hoops or riding trikes on the sidewalks. But for Wray, the mask was a terrifying twist. “When I first saw a monkey with a rubber baby doll’s head stuck over its head as a mask, it immediately struck me as horrifying and beyond weird.” Wray said. “Something about the combination of the doll head – which I think is scary looking to begin with – and a long tail just struck a chord in me.” Shocking to many Westerners, it’s a common sight on the streets of Jakarta. Most Indonesians pass along unfazed or mildly amused and a few give the handlers money. “Whether they feel more sorry for the monkey or handler, I don’t know.” Wray added. Wray decided to venture past the sidewalk performances and explore where the monkeys lived and how they were trained. “Initially I was purely interested in the masked monkeys,” Wray said. “But once I saw the village and the condition in which the people there lived alongside the monkeys, another grim layer was added to the pictures and to my thinking about the monkeys.” “The idea came to me that the disturbing image of the monkeys wearing the masks is a visual distillation of the kinds of horrible things that happen when people are driven to desperation by poverty.” Wray said he was going to continue with the project, adding, “One thing I would definitely like to concentrate on is how the monkeys get to the city from the jungle—the commercial process that brings them into urban areas as pets or performers.” Misery of Indonesia's monkeys: Chained macaques forced to dress up in doll costumes and ride scooters for tourists attraction ! this has to stop !!! ''Topeng Monyet'', or dancing monkeys, is a particularly cruel practice where juvenile macaques are forced to perform (dance, ride bicycles, wear masks) in the crowded and busy streets of Jakarta. An illegal trade in wild macaques that are captured from the wild !! has built up around the phenomena known as Topeng Monyet. They live in a place called "Monkey Village" and are kept in small cages and in chains. Trainers sometimes hang them upside down or tie their hands on their back to make them go up- straight like you can see on this picture !! Petition via Angels for Animals Network - Less than a week ago we launched a petition asking new company Skaist Taylor to stop selling FUR. (petition here - www.change.org/SkaistTaylor)
Despite the fact that our petition now has over 12,500 signatures (more than 8 times as many followers as they have on facebook), they have remained silent as they continue to delete any comments or feedback left on their posts. Fortunately, this is a new brand that should be eager to protect their growing image, so I feel very confident that we can continue to educate these clueless women and encourage them to go cruelty-free & fur-free before they launch their next line! PLEASE sign and share the petition, and boycott Skaist Taylor until they pledge to go fur-free. Thank you! Petition, related to the piggery article on the right, to ask relevant authorities to shut down the piggery, can be found here http://www.aussiepigs.com.au/act
PETITION: Protect Dolphins from Nitrogen Pollution in Florida - Please sign this petition here
Dolphins are dying at alarmingly high rates in Florida's Indian River Lagoon, a shallow estuary closed off from the Atlantic Ocean by barrier beaches. This place of white sands, seagrasses, and abundant wildlife has become over-saturated by harmful nitrogen pollutants, with a black, mucky bottom, choked by algal blooms. In 2008, 43 dolphins died in the Indian River Lagoon. In 2009, 48 dolphins died. Dolphins are getting sick, exhibiting skin-eating fungal infections, and they're dying. Their waters have become a toxic soup. To save the dolphins, we can easily lessen the amount of nitrogen pollution entering the Lagoon. To do this, county ordinances are needed. Nitrogen is the worst pollutant of oceans in the world. Dolphin deaths are greatest when chlorophyll and nitrogen levels are highest in the water. The EPA estimates that the Lagoon gets three million pounds of nitrogen per year from the land. This is 1 million pounds of nitrogen over the ecosystem's sustainable threshold. Excessive nitrogen creates toxic algae blooms, ocean dead zones, fish die-offs, harms wildlife, and greatly threatens biodiversity, as well as lessening recreational beach and water experiences. We have had success in Martin County, one of the six counties on Indian River Lagoon. Rob Moir and Capt Nan Beaver met with the County Commissioners and delivered 10,000 Stop Nitrogen Pollution letters. Martin County responded by passing a new fertilizer rule banning the application of lawn fertilizers during the summer rainy months, a time period when fertilizer does the least good for lawns and causes the most harmful algal blooms. We call this a lawn-fertilizer holiday because it saves lawn-owners time, effort and money. Every dollar in lost fertilizer sales during the holiday is a dollar saved in the pocket of a lawn-owner. An effective lawn fertilizer ordinance is required to reduce nitrogen pollution and protect dolphins. Your signature will help. We will organize, print, and deliver your letters to each individual chairperson. Act Now to Protect the Dolphins of Florida's Indian River Lagoon from Nitrogen Pollution. We will hand deliver your letters with personal comments to the decision-makers. Your voices mean much to local school students and their families who have been calling for responsible lawn care. Thank you. Warning the video shows green slime clogging waterways, skin-eating fungal infection on live dolphin, and a dead dolphin. Above a terrified animal is taken from its tiny cage to be skinned for fur. Countless Animals being kept in cruel conditions and killed using barbaric means to be skinned for fur. . . Update: After the official ban of the SuperTrawler fishing in Australian waters for two years, January 2013 saw a second proposal put forward to allow the SuperTrawler begin its devastation of the oceanic environment. When more information comes to light about this second proposal, it will be posted here.
. Update on the Giant Super-trawler and the attached petition. The Australia Federal Labor Government of Australia how now agreed to ban the super-trawler from fishing in Australian waters for two years while further research on the impact of this fishing practice is gathered. The Federal Opposition party of Australia was opposed to the ban, however the Independents and Green Party supported the ban and thankfully it was passed by Parliament. An Australian Federal election will be held in 2013, so the fate of Australian waters and its survival or destruction will be in the hands of the voting public.
Giant Super-trawler has now arrived in Australian waters ready to decimate the oceanic environment between SE Queensland and Western Australia. This "Super-Trawler - Factory" has already removed fish stocks and sea life from West African waters, and now this trawler is now in Australia to do the same. The plan is to remove 1800 tonnes of "target" fish (also killing thousands of tonnes more "waste" or "non-target" fish) from Australian waters to sell to West Africa whose waters have been emptied by the same super-trawlers! Please help stop the rape of Australian oceans by signing the petitions below! Add your voice to say no before it's too late! Senegal has banned super-trawlers after its waters were plundered by these "Oceanic Killer" vessels. This petition is to urge the Australian Government to also ban these huge trawler-factories, before it's too late! Tell the Australian Prime Minister to ban super trawlers from Australian waters! Further articles on this devastating threat to oceanic survival can be found beneath the embedded petition. Animals that are given away free, have been used as bait dogs in the dog fighting "industry", become victims of bestiality such as the dog above, used in animal research experiments, and have met with similar gruesome fates. Craigslist (and other print and online media) need to stop advertising animals for free. If people must pay for an animal, they are more likely to value the life of these sentient creatures. Please sign the petition below to encourage Craigslist to stop advertising free animals.
PETITION: Ask Craigslist CEO to revise security measures for ads listing pets. To: Jim Buckmaster - CEO of Craigslist Mr. Buckmaster, Given that more and more people daily, are searching out animals on Craigslist, for purposes which include torture, mutilation, dog fighting/baiting, and bestiality, it is long past time for security measures for this type of ad to be implemented. Dogs and cats which have been family companions, are regularly being sought out by individuals whose intentions are inhumane and often criminal. After conducting an investigation into three suspects who having located a dog on Craigslist, conspired to commit acts of bestiality, Joseph M. Arpaio of the Maricopa County Sheriff's office in Phoenix, requested in March 2011,that you address this problem, however you have not responded. In dealing with living creatures, measures need to be in place to ensure their well being. As the CEO of Craigslist, you have the ability and the responsibility, to take positive action. We the undersigned, respectfully request that you review and revise policies regarding the listing of animals. "The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.. I hold that, the more helpless a creature, the more entitled it is to protection by man from the cruelty of man"~ Mahatma Gandhi "Until we have the courage to recognize cruelty for what it is—whether its victim is human or animal —we cannot expect things to be much better in this world. We cannot have peace among men whose hearts delight in killing any living creature. By every act that glorifies or even tolerates such moronic delight in killing we set back the progress of humanity." ~ Rachel Carson, Silent Spring Please sign the Craigslist petition here Read More/Sign Petition: http://www.thepetitionsite.com/603/611/912/prosecute-bear-baiting-as-afederal-felony/
Fur is only beautiful on the animal born with it. The horror of a fur animals life is only surpassed by the extreme horror of their death, because fur farmers do not want the pelt damaged for maximum profit, fur animals are killed by barbaric means such as shoving a hot poker up their anus, skinned alive, electrocuted, beaten to death, throat cut and bleed to death, and the gruesome methods go on. Wearing fur makes a person look bulging and fatter than their actual weight. It also reveals that the person wearing it, considers their vanity and reveling in their wealth, more important than the values of compassion. Fur is an obscene example of human callousness. Some fur coats using larger animals may require approximately ten animals to be killed, but for fur coats using small animals like mink (a type of ferret) or Chinchilla, hundreds may die. Read more about the lives and deaths of fur animals at this link provided by In Defense of Animals. And more info provided by PETA here. Each year over 40 million animals die so people can buy fur. Approximately 26 million mink, 4.5 million fox, 250,000 Chinchillas, 150,000 Sable, 100,000 Fitch (Polecat), 100,000 Raccoon dog, Lynx and Bobcat. Plus over 10 Million other animals trapped by leghold traps and other means in the wild. Source(s) www.mercyforanimals.org

Poor Cecil was 13 years old, never bothered anyone, and was even collared by Oxford University ( a collar worth $55,000 which this disgusting man tried to destroy to get rid of the evidence!) Originally this man stated that he paid thousands of dollars for a license to shoot a lion, and now it has been revealed he had no such license. They had also lured Cecil off the National Park with bait so they could kill him with a crossbow, but after Cecil was shot with an arrow, Cecil lingered for 40 hours in excruciating pain and fear, before he was finally shot with a bullet and killed. He was then beheaded and skinned. These type of people are a blight on humanity. Cats Intended for Eating in Vietnam Saved from Truck -- Please Sign and Share This Petition to Tell Authorities Not to Kill Them!
Cat meat, known in Vietnam as "little tiger," is officially banned in the country. However, it's increasingly becoming a delicacy in the country. Authorities recently seized a truck full of thousands of cats destined "for consumption" in the country and being smuggled from China. The story seems unbelievable, but was reported by the well-established AFP wire service.
A police officer said that according to Vietnamese law, smuggled goods will be "destroyed." Please sign the petition to ask the Hanoi Police Department to ensure the cats are sent to a shelter or sanctuary and are not killed! UPDATE: Despite thousands of people speaking out for the protection of these poor cats, the authorities, shockingly and cruelly, had them buried alive! Seems like the authorities had little more compassion that the people who were planning to butcher them for meat. Absolutely appalling! Demand Justice for Spanish

Ban Horse-Drawn Carriages in Chicago
Collapsing while pulling carriages during summer heat waves, being forced to stand stationary in the sub-freezing, bitter cold while awaiting the next fare, being tethered to a carriage while being forced to inhale the exhaust fumes of the automobile just inches in front of them - Carriage horses are overworked in the harshest weather and most polluted conditions. There is nothing charming about this. Built for soft ground and pastures, these horses are suffering from early lameness, respiratory disease, heat prostration and spooking (which can lead to accidents and injury). Watch a trailer for the 2008 NYC based documentary "Blinders" here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=31GgmMsFzOM Many cities in the United States and around the world have already banned the use of carriage horses. And as both major candidates for mayor of New York City support legislation banning this, it's about time Mayor Emanuel get's on board too. Let's demonstrate our compassion by supporting the ban of horse-drawn carriages in our city. Cruelty to animals does not belong in the streets of Chicago. . Petition | STOP the sadistic torture of primates at British Columbia University!
British Columbia University, located in Vancouver, Canada, is trying hard to be famous in the academic world. Thus, they have decided to implement a complex scheme of sadistic / barbaric / inhumane torture of primates, as they are on the verge of “a very important discovery that will change all we know about humans”. Sounds good, but here is exactly what is happening: monkeys and baboons have their head scalped, in order to properly study brain functions. They have their hands and feet tied to chairs and metal detectors shoved in their eyes and ears. During these complex operations, some primates wake up because the anesthesia is gone. The pain cannot be described. After surgery, they are kept without water of up to three days. Many do not survive, but who cares, as long as the tests have been completed. It is pretty obvious that no such tests will cure any human diseases. Consequently, we urge the University to immediately stop the brutal research and let the primates live in peace! Click here to sign - http://www.yousign.org/en/torture-bc With a new Prime Minister in office, now is the best time to convince Australia to permanently ban all live animal exports. For that to happen, we must show the new government that there is strong public support for ending this cruelty.
Former Australian Agriculture Minister Joe Ludwig defended live animal exports, calling shocking footage from Egypt an "anomaly". It's been seven years since the government first issued an identical statement, yet evidence of cruel and malicious export practice still surfaces regularly. We watched shocking videos of terrified Australian cattle who were shipped to Egypt, having their eyes stabbed, tendons slashed, throats cut open, and bodies otherwise tortured while they were still alive! This is not a practice our country should be associated with and cattle are not the only species that suffer. Australian livestock groups have called on the government to exclude Egypt from our live export trade agreements, and even that doesn't quite tackle the principle of the issue. Tell the Ministry of Agriculture that we need to forego live exports for their viable alternatives, and we must act immediately before our country's credibility is tarnished even further. .
. In a recent episode of "Under Wild Skies," an NBC Sports show about big game hunting, the host (an NRA lobbyist) and his guide gun down a helpless bull elephant and take the ivory with them.
As if big game hunting wasn't disgusting enough on its own, it's horror is compounded when a national sports channel broadcasts the entire thing, and when the animal being hunted is under constant threat from cruel and relentless poachers. Sign and share the petition below and tell NBC Sports that you won't stand for this inhumane treatment of these majestic, intelligent animals. In a recent episode of this show, the host and his guide stalk and shoot a bull elephant, who trumpets and writhes in pain, even charging after the two men. The host then shoots it again between the eyes. After the elephant falls, the two men stand next to the dead elephant to gloat about their "achievement." Upon returning to their camp, they discuss how "special" it is to bring back an elephant's ivory. This show demonstrates an absolutely horrific lack of respect for wild animals in their own habitat, a lack of any kind of empathy for the suffering of these animals, and a complete ignorance of the problems facing these animals every day. Please join the thousands of people who are voicing their outrage at this episode and this show. Tell NBC Sports to remove the show from their programming immediately! Please sign and share this petition. Every day enormous tree harvesters are cutting down around a thousand eucalyptus trees in Australia. Each tree is cut down within seconds, trimmed and then piled up. No plant biodiversity can be found in the mono-cultures of the Australian eucalyptus plantations. Please sign the petition here and share.
The natural habitats of the koalas are vanishing which forces many koalas to live on eucalyptus plantations. The endangered animals are slow and cannot escape the approaching harvesters. They hold on to the trees until their painful death. Loggers have recently informed Australian television broadcasting services about the slow and horrible deaths of the innocent koalas. If the animals are badly injured, they will just be left on the plantations until they die. “How often does it happen?” the journalist asks the logger. “Sometimes two koalas per hour are killed, sometimes it’s only one koala a day. And the injured animals are left out here to die”, the man answers. “We have found the animals in horrible condition. Broken limbs, impact wounds, broken backs, dead mothers with babies that are still alive and trying to survive”, says animal rights activist Tracey Wilson. Animal rescue centres are treating some of the injured koalas, but it is very rare for a company to call for help for injured animals. They do not want to be associated with dying koalas. Instead, they refer to the certification label of the ‘Forest Stewardship Council (FSC)’. In 2006 the plantations were recognised as ‘responsible forest management’. The painful death of large numbers of koalas does not seem to be as important as the profits the industry makes, says the journalist. The logs are chipped and exported to China and Japan, where they are processed in pulp and paper mills. Please help to protect the beautiful koalas with your signature. Petition shared by Klaus Schenck - Rainforest Rescue (Rettet den Regenwald e.V. The Indian state-controlled coal mining company Coal India needs money to persue the construction of new coal mines. The company has mandated Deutsche Bank to organise the increase of capital in return for stock worth a total of US $ 1 billion. Coal India is not only the largest company in the world in terms of coal production, it is also one of the worst. It has forcibly displaced forest communities, destroyed critical tiger habitat and even used child labour. In Central India, thirteen new coal mines and numerous coal-fired power plants are about to be constructed. Greenpeace India has researched the effects of these construction projects on the tigers. About 1.1 million hectares of tropical rainforest and at least ten tiger sanctuaries are at stake. The environmental officer of a subsidiary of Coal India, Mr. Shinde, makes it simple: “We have to choose if we want electricity or we want tigers.” Environmentalists and locals strongly oppose the project due to its negative impact on the tigers. Deutsche Bank, however, has made a decision against the tigers. They have hoped that helping to finance environmental destruction would go unnoticed. The bank’s support for Coal India can only be stopped by public backlash. Please help us to change Deutsche Bank’s view on this issue. Sign our letter of protest and force Deutsche Bank to rethink their decision and to cut ties with Coal India. Look into the eyes of sadness and pain. The barbaric and nonsensical killing and maiming of ducks in Victoria continues with the annual duck hunting season every year. Even though recreational duck shooting has been banned in QLD, NSW, the ACT and WA, the Victorian state government continues to support it. Aside from the cruelty and pain inflicted, duck shooting wounds as many birds as are actually killed. For every three birds killed one is wounded and left to die a slow and agonising death. For every ten ducks bagged six are crippled.
Endangering native bird populations and causing mass injury and suffering solely for the twisted pleasure of a minority of perverted individuals is irresponsible, unethical and immoral. This year's season saw over 200 rare and threatened Freckled and Blue bill ducks and 50 Swans killed. In a 2012 survey three out of every four Victorians wanted recreational duck shooting banned. As a veterinarian who has an ethical responsibility to animal welfare the Premier should be outraged at this totally senseless cruelty. It is time that this barbaric practice which has for too long been misleadingly portrayed as a "sport" was stopped. Save free-range in Queensland (Australia)! Don't let the Queensland government increase stocking densities by 66.7% to 10,000 birds per hectare!! 10,000 birds per hectare is not free-range! It's wall-to-wall birds without a roof! Please sign the petition (plus more information) here.
Due to a 'loophole' in the laws on exporting live animals, Australia was able to send thousands of pregnant dairy cows to die in Qatar. Photos and reports from two whistleblowers reveal that within one week, one in four of the animals died of thirst or malnutrition. Mothers watched as their baby cows died in agony.
Despite these photos and eye witness accounts, the Australian Government didn't investigate this incident because breeding animals are excluded from live export regulations. The dairy cows were pregnant when they were shipped, so they weren't part of any Government-sanctioned 'supply chain.' When breeding animals are shipped out of Australia, no one knows where they'll end up or what suffering they'll face. So far, it looks like no one will be held accountable for the deaths of these animals, and nothing is stopping this from happening again -- unless we speak out! Sign the petition to help stop this here. If you are an Australian citizen, call or email your local MP to tell them to close the loophole on exporting breeding animals! Following the deforestation of the land to produce palm oil, elephants have been forced to live with humans, destroying farms, flattening houses and sometimes killing people. Villagers took Raja, and demanded compensation after his family ruined crops in the area.
Article and petition courtesy of Andres.Grijalva.Vi In all the 30 years I have been working in Asian elephant conservation, I thought I had seen it all – blatant corruption, the rape and total disregard of our beautiful planet and sickening wildlife atrocities, to name but a few. All due to the most dangerous animal of all: homo sapiens. Not much shocks me any more, but something happened in recent weeks that shook me to the core when the charity Elephant Family and the Ecologist Film Unit set out to document the environmental genocide that is out of control on the island of Sumatra, Indonesia. Sumatra is special to me because I spent a lot of time there on expeditions when I was younger. It was a paradise – vast pristine forests, intact coral reefs and abundant wildlife. All this has changed now and their elephants are the most endangered on the planet. In a single generation, the population has been cut in half, with countless other animals disappearing at breakneck speed. During the filming, a helpless, emaciated baby male elephant called Raja, who was barely a year old, was found in a village, shackled with heavy chains to a tree. He had been taken hostage by the villagers, who were demanding compensation from the Sumatran government for the damage his family had done to their crops. Can you believe that we are now living in a world where people are actually holding baby elephants to ransom? It is almost unthinkable. But just look at the photographs – look at Raja, as he strains against his chains, waving his little trunk for food and reassurance. He is bellowing in desperation for his mother. I have heard that sound of distressed calves many times in my life. It never fails to haunt me. But it is his eyes that haunt me more than anything – pleading for help – innocent, desperate and helpless. A war is being waged across Asia. In the face of relentless deforestation, elephants are being forced out of their natural habitats and they have no choice but to share their living space with humans. As the elephants’ forest home is destroyed, stressed and starving herds flee from the chainsaws straight into villages. They demolish everything in sight, trampling crops, flattening houses and often killing people. Frankly, you really cannot blame the villagers for taking such drastic steps in the sheer desperation to survive and feed their own families. Capturing a baby elephant and holding it to ransom is grisly and depressing, but it is reality as humans and elephants fight for space. People need to know why this is happening. They need to understand what is driving this madness. The cause is an innocently named product called palm oil. It’s a constituent part of almost everything that we use and consume – biscuits, margarine, ice cream, soap, shampoo. The list is endless. And the blame lies firmly with the greed of the large corporations in the East that produce it as a cash crop to fuel the insatiable consumerism of the Western world. The thirst for palm oil is apparently unquenchable and its cultivation is ripping out the last great rainforests. Although forest destruction and its lethal impact on endangered species are plain to see, palm oil is practically an invisible ingredient, listed under the generic term ‘vegetable oil’. April, Duta Palma, Sinar Mas and Sime Darby may not be household names, but these are just some of the companies producing palm oil in Indonesia and selling it on to the market for about £500 per ton. L’Occitane, Ferrero, Cadbury, Ginster’s pasties, Clover margarine, Pringles, Kellogg’s, Haribo, Nestlé and Mars are just a few of the more familiar names of those that use palm oil. All the major supermarkets use palm oil in their own-brand products. Some are better than others in getting palm oil from responsible sources, but the point is that it is everywhere and in everything. It is a silent assassin. Not until 2014 will there be a legal requirement for manufacturers to label palm oil on their products. And, to make matters worse, the only certification body to monitor the production of so-called ‘sustainable’ palm oil is immensely flawed. Consumer industries are hiding behind a fallacy. The verdant rainforest of Aceh in North Sumatra is one of the largest left in South-East Asia. It is the only place in the world where elephants, tigers, orangutans and rhinos all still live together – a real life Jungle Book. But, right now, the Aceh government is close to adopting a plan that would see hundreds of thousands of hectares of this forest opened up for the cultivation of palm oil. This ironically titled ‘Spatial Plan’ is nothing more than a deforestation plan – an extinction plan, seeking to legitimise the illegal felling that is already happening. They will become unrelenting and vast areas of land will flood. Wildlife will be forced into ever greater conflict with people, and elephants like Raja won’t stand a chance. Sadly for him, it is too late. He died alone, still chained to that tree, though Elephant Family worked tirelessly for a week to negotiate his release. Already we’ve discovered that another calf, this one just a month old, has been captured and held to ransom by local farmers. Everyone is working around the clock to make sure that this little calf survives. I am doubtful. But in the grander scheme of things there is hope. If there wasn’t hope, I would have packed up my bags a long time ago. If we can protect these forests and stop the new plan in Aceh from going ahead, then we’re taking a giant step in the right direction. Hundreds of supporters have already written to the Aceh government urging them to stop destroying their forests. But we need help. We need everyone to write. Increased knowledge of palm oil and compulsory labelling will finally allow shoppers to make informed choices about what they buy. We need to push food manufacturers and retailers to support a transformation of the industry towards genuine sustainable palm oil, and we need to do it quickly. The most useful thing we can do to help is educate ourselves and avoid buying products that contain palm oil whilst urging companies to stop destroying the rain forests. "Fur is Green" is greenwash - a petition to counteract pro-fur propaganda by the Canadian government, and help protect animals from the gross cruelty and death the fur industry inflicts upon defenseless animals. Please follow the link here to read more and sign. Canadian tours to bludgeon baby fur seals to death, then sell the fur to the wealthy with no conscience, are getting a boost from the Canadian Government's pro-fur stance. Alaska's curious and charming sea otters are finally on the path to recovery after being pushed to the brink of extinction by over-hunting. Under the Marine Mammal Protection Act, Alaska Native hunters alone are allowed to kill sea otters -- and they can only do so to create "authentic native handicrafts."
Unfortunately those protections could be weakened if the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service collapses under the greedy pressures of the commercial fishing industry -- rules may be expanded to include nearly unaltered sea otter pelts under the "handicrafts" definition. Sea otters play an important role in Alaska's coastal ecosystems by encouraging the growth of kelp beds, which serve as nurseries for fish and create important carbon dioxide sinks. But sea otters also eat some species that are targeted by commercial fishers, so the fishing industry is pushing to control sea otter populations. Please take action now to tell the Fish and Wildlife Service to protect Alaska's sea otters. Declare a sanctuary in the Arctic! By signing the following petition, you can lend your voice to tell global leaders that it is imperative that humankind establishes an Arctic Sanctuary! The following information was provided by Greenpeace Australia - Right now, the Arctic is melting because of our use of dirty fossil fuel energy. In the near future, it could be ice free for the first time since humans walked the earth.
In the last 30 years, we've lost as much as three-quarters of the floating ice cap at the top of the world. Scientists say it's now in a 'death spiral.' To save the Arctic, we have to act today. Join the 3 million strong movement of people who want the Arctic kept safe for future generations. When we reach our target, we'll plant it as a Flag for the Future on top of the world. Thirty years ago, we launched a similar campaign to protect the Antarctic. Nobody thought we would succeed, but we did, and we created a world park around the South Pole. Now the Arctic is calling.
