Fur is worn by ugly humans and beautiful animals.
A Jewish philosopher speaks out against the inhumanity of the meat industry.
Humans are omnivores but that doesn't mean we need to eat meat. Being omnivores means we are opportunist eaters. Our ancestors would have eaten whatever they found, plant food and the remains of predator kills. As omnivores, we can lead very healthy lives without animal products in our diet, and more importantly, we can lead very humane, compassionate lives.

On the 20th March 2018, the World's last male northern white rhino dies, and still, trophy hunters are given permission to kill rhinos because hunters pay the big bucks to slaughter endangered species. How much money is "enough" if it means a species is wiped off the face of the Earth? Also ignorant people still purchase rhino horn (which is simply the same substance as our own fingernails and hair) to enhance their "virility", encouraging ruthless poachers to continue killing these innocent creatures until rhinos are wiped off the face of our planet.
This image shows how recently, thousands of baby pigs and mama pigs were buried alive. There was a remedy for their suspected ailment, but instead of applying the known remedy for the disease, or at the very least, using humane ways of putting them down, these people chose the "cost-efficient" choice, bury them alive. I hope the spirits of these poor animals, haunt them in their sleep.
Humans fed hungry dogs beneath tanks so the dogs would equate a tank with being fed. The starved dog in this photograph is expecting a meal, but instead, once it reached the tank, the bomb on its back was exploded. Tell me again how humans are more evolved and compassionate than other species?

New Zealand's dairy industry exposed: days-old baby calves being ripped from their mothers, and treated with horrendous cruelty. This new undercover footage by Farmwatch & SAFE is just beyond words. Please share so people will know the truth.
Cows are pregnant for nine months, before enduring a difficult, painful labour to give birth to their little ones. Their babies are taken from their mothers a few hours after birth, sometimes a few days after delivery. Their babies are taken away so the mother cow's milk (and dairy products produced from their milk, such as cheese, butter, ice-cream, and yoghurt) can be consumed by humans. The babies are sent to slaughter for veal. The treatment of baby cows in this video is pretty commonplace in the dairy industry all over the world. In order to produce milk, and other dairy products for humans, cows must be continually pregnant or lactating. The mother cows are not allowed to keep their babies because the milk would then be used to feed their young ones, so the babies are killed and we get their milk. For things to change we must learn what is actually going on in our world, especially caused by our own choices and actions. Ignorance is not bliss if innocent animals suffer due to our ignorance. We need to take our blinkers off in order to create a kinder world.

The horror which is the fur industry!
No kind, humane, or civilized person would ever wear fur.
One of the ways animals are killed for fur. This fox struggles to try to save its life; it dies being electrocuted via its anus.
Animals raised for fur, suffer unspeakable cruelty during their lives, then finally suffer the most horrendously barbaric methods of death, simply so some humans may wrap themselves up in vanity, believing their viciously stolen skins show they have "made it", when it simply tells the world, this is a cruel and callous person, who has no fashion sense beyond the cavemen.
Above, a poor animal, violently and tragically murdered via electrocution for its fur.
How can anyone be proud to wear something that was gained by such immense horror and cruelty?!
The hardship and abuse suffered by the working animal, like these poor mine donkeys working in hazardous conditions until their subsequent deaths.

It brings to mind the saying "If you live by the sword, you die by the sword." Killer whales are beautiful and incredibly intelligent animals that deserve so much more. Whales in captivity are subjected to conditions that are not only unnatural but also cruel. They spend their day swimming around a concrete pool when whales in the wild often swim 100 miles a day. It is a known fact that animals in captivity used for performing are subject to depression, frustration, and lack of energy. Often times whales are seen floating at the surface for hours on end which would never happen in the open ocean. Though SeaWorld has denied it, there is footage describing how they have separated mothers and calves which sadly only adds to their whales' depression. Roughly 95% of killer whales in captivity experience collapsed dorsal fins while this only occurs in 1% of orcas in the wild. Orcas have highly developed brains which allows them to have strong family bonds and heightened emotions. Captivity deprives them of so much and their quality of life is at an extreme low which too often results in aggression. These are just a few reasons why I strongly urge you to help me give killer whales the life and freedom that they so greatly deserve. Please sign and share the petition at this link Update #1 May 28, 2015 SeaWorld is continuing their efforts to increase ticket sales and so far they have been successful. After the release of Blackfish, attendance declined as audiences realized that keeping whales in captivity for entertainment is wrong. However with their new commercial drawing people back in, now is the time to act and put a stop to this.
DOLPHINS AND SEA LIONS THAT WERE KIDNAPPED FROM THEIR FAMILIES SHOULD BE SENT TO A SANCTUARY IMMEDIATELY! Dolphins who were swimming hundreds of miles a day, are now confined to tiny tanks at Parc Astérix Theme Park. Sea Lions who migrated hundreds of miles a year are living their entire lives in a pool almost the size of a plunge pool. With noisy rides close by and music blaring out of speakers, this is no environment for some of the most intelligent species on the planet to live. These animals have now sadly been torn from their natural environment, so it is impossible for them to survive in the open sea. So the only escape from this prison, is to a sea sanctuary. These dolphins and sea lions are often trained using food deprivation, so their only motive to perform tricks is to receive food. I saw many dolphins who refused to perform being denied food by the trainers. Three weeks ago I had seen dolphins and sea lions in the wild. The wild Dolphins were clearly engaged, jumping and swimming as a group. These dolphins however looked depressed and swam separately. The wild sea lions were socially interacting and almost constantly calling. These sea lions only called under their trainers instructions and I didn't see them socialise once. It is obvious that these kidnapped animals are extremely unhappy here, so please join me in calling on Parc Astérix to retire the dolphins and sea lions to a sea sanctuary. Thank you for your support, Joseph Please sign and share the petition to help free these dolphins and sea lions at this link. Animal torture masquerading as science. Just one more reason NOT to support animal testing of any kind! More about animal testing or vivisection here. And a free book about animal testing to read and download free here. Thank you, France! France has just changed its laws in regards to animals. In France, the law now states that animals are sentient beings; while in all other countries, laws still regard animals as "a piece of furniture", an object or possession with no rights to compassion treatment, just a thing to be owned, bought, sold, or used as a commodity. Let's hope the rest of the world follows France's progressive lead! Yay, France! Teaching children how to torture and kill animals for profit and vanity, encourages a world of growing cruelty towards animals. Surely a responsible parent, and a good citizen of the world, teaches their children the value of empathy and compassion? Skinning animals for fun sounds like a tour organized by Hannibal Lecter! I suppose it is hardly surprising, that the above horror of fur and skinning tours in Denmark is brought to us by the same country whose Copenhagen Zoo decided to hold a public execution of Marius the giraffe, using a bolt to his head (in front of a crowd that included small children), then fed his body to the lions! AUTHORITIES IN VIETNAM BURY THOUSANDS OF LIVE CATS (3 TONS)! Last week, authorities in Hanoi intercepted thousands of live cats (three tons) that were illegally smuggled in from China for human consumption. While it is illegal to consume cats in Vietnam, the underground cat meat trade is big business. Every week, thousands of cats are smuggled into the country for human consumption. Regulations mandate that all smuggled goods confiscated by authorities must be destroyed. However, animal protection organizations were urging Hanoi officials to turn the cats over to them instead. Unfortunately, this heartfelt plea fell on deaf ears. On February 2, 2015, police forces announced that all cats have been buried. It is unknown whether the cats were killed before being buried or not. Hunter Shaffer, Chief Investigative Officer with the Global Conservation Group says they are disappointed with the actions of the Vietnam government. Because authorities do not have the resources to humanely euthanize all the cats, Shaffer says police likely buried the cats alive. The group also wrote an open letter to the Vietnam Ambassador in the United States condemning their actions. In the year 2015, this type of animal abuse on such a large scale is simply unacceptable. Please sign and share this important petition urging authorities to change their animal handling policies to prevent another tragedy from occurring again. Although koalas themselves are protected by law, around 80 percent of any remaining habitat occurs on privately owned land and almost none of that is protected by legislation. The Australian Koala Foundation estimates that as a result of the loss of their habitat, around 4,000 koalas are killed each year by dogs and cars alone. New government approved land clearing and development in the Byron Bay area threatens the extermination of a colony of 240 koalas. A Byron Residents’ Group is trying to stop this development, but the government remains firm in their resolve to create an enormous housing development which will see the deaths of these animals. To stop the development from moving forward, the Byron Residents’ Group members, together with animal welfare activists, came up with a creative delivery strategy to make sure the Save the Koala petition receives the attention it deserves and lands into the hands of its intended target, the NSW Planning Minister, Pru Goward. Please sign this important petition (just click on this link to the website to sign petition) to help protect animals such as elephants, lions and other "exotic" animals from a lifetime of cruelty. In order to "train" wild animals to perform, they're abused, and reactions are attained using negative reinforcement from humans physically striking them using their hands, whips, and bullhooks; often electric shock prods are also used. Animals that are forced to perform during entertainment shows are housed in small, temporary facilities and/or also restricted via chains to minimize mobility. Also, during arduous journeys between performance locations, they're again housed in cramped areas and elephants are also chained. During travel, the creatures are forced to live in their feces and urine. All of this abuse, living conditions, and overall inhumane treatment of wild animals leads to physical ailments, stress, trauma and often leads to death. There have been several documented cases of circus animals having physical injuries from bullhooks, diseases, lack of veterinary care, and mental stress that is portrayed by the body pacing, rocking, swaying heads; all of this leads to animals "snapping" and posing threat to the public, which leads to animals being gunned down in cities. Almost 30 countries have taken action to end animal cruelty that stems from traveling circuses and it's time for the U.S. to do so as well. I understand circuses have been a part of our culture, but we shouldn't subject animals to a lifetime of trauma and a grueling death for the sake of entertainment. The video below shows how animals are killed for fur (and human vanity) using anal electrocution. All methods used to murder animals killed for fur, ensure the pelt is relatively unmarked and the animal suffers an extraordinarily painful death. Aside from electrocution, popular methods for executing animals used for fur include hanging, throat cutting, bleeding to death, and hot poker thrust into the anus. If you care about animal welfare, do not wear fur and avoid most items labelled "faux fur" too, as up to 80% of faux fur is (intentionally) mislabeled, and actually real fur (usually raccoon dog, or cat or dog fur mostly from China). Another clip showing the horror that results from humans wanting to drape themselves in dead animals ie fur. "Over seven months, 30 fur farms, seven hours of footage and one and a half thousand photographs, Animal Defenders International investigated a random sample of Finnish fur farms. This investigation exposes the terrible suffering that is part and parcel of the fur industry. Foxes and mink are wild animals but in fur farms, they cannot cope with the unnatural environment they find themselves in. Worse still, the conditions in these farms are awful: their short, miserable lives are spent in squalid surroundings full of fear and distress, suffering injuries, infection and deformities. All for an unnecessary product for which a variety of alternatives are available. It is time for designers who use fur, and the people who wear it, to take responsibility for the way that the product they are wearing has been produced." Living, feeling creatures, the same as any swan, eagle or hummingbird, treated as inanimate products to be thrown, shoved, stuffed and cut These birds feel pain and suffering like any other creature, like our pets and nature's wild-life. What gives us the right to treat any feeling creature, capable of great suffering and misery with such distrain, lack of respect, downright cruelty? Our choices, on how we live and what companies we choose to fund with our buyer dollars has led to the inhumanity and lack of compassion we see above. If we can live a healthy, happy life without harming others, why wouldn't we? THE HORROR AND INHUMANITY THAT IS "CANNED" LION HUNTING The photos above show a glimpse of the shocking treatment and environment that captive lions endure on lion farms in South Africa for "Canned Hunting" purposes. The image of the lion being dragged out in preparation for being drugged and put in a restricted area so a human can shoot it (like shooting a fish in a barrel) was posted yesterday by a South African reporter on Twitter. The photo was taken at a Canned Lion Farm. Thank you to the Anti-Fur Society for this informative, disturbing share. What is wrong with any human being that they could think killing a "battery lion" is a way to prove their "manliness"? We humans often declare our superior nature, that we are the most intelligent, most compassionate, most civilized. We are the only animal (humans are primates) that kills for the fun, aims to profit from the suffering of others - other humans and non-human animals, and lives out of harmony with the balance of nature. To be worthy of the title human, we must first be humane. Marius, healthy 18 month old baby giraffe, one day before his scheduled execution by Copenhagen Zoo Marius, a healthy, adorable 18 month old giraffe is to be killed tomorrow by Copenhagen Zoo and fed to their lions and other meat-eating display animals. The C.Zoo says that it is because they have not found another place for Marius and they cannot keep him due to possible inbreeding. But TWO zoos (one in Sweden and the other in Yorkshire) HAVE offered to take Marius but they receive no reply to their requests to Copenhagen Zoo; Secondly, when this giraffe was conceived, why didn't the zoo vets remove the fetus before it was born if inbreeding was an issue? Thirdly, why did the zoo wait until Marius was large enough to feed a significant group of meat-eating 'exhibits" to schedule his death? If Marius is killed, many people will not forget!! Click here to sign the petition before it is too late. Update on Marius The above photo shows Marius after a bolt gun was used on his head. He was executed in front of a crowd, including small children. This public execution of Marius was nothing short of disgusting, and not only did they kill him for an audience (seems like some humans have not moved far from the vicious rabble of 2000 years ago who enjoyed the public spectacle of animal deaths in the Collessium?!) but they proceeded to dissect his young body into portions to feed to the lions. Marius was labelled surplus and the excuse for killing him was that the zoo feared inbreeding, but we have all been lied to. If they feared inbreeding, the fetus that was to become Marius would have been removed by vets before his poor giraffe mother went through the long and difficult pregnancy which lasts between 13 to 15 months, and even more difficult and dangerous birth. The zoo WANTED Marius to be born, as baby animals are a real crowd draw card so more cash in their zoo coffers. They also wanted him to grow to a large size before announcing his pending execution because they ALWAYS intended to slaughter him to feed to the lions to save one weeks lion feeding budget. That is why Marius was not given to either of the two zoos that were eager to adopt him. That is why they didn't bother to have him desexed to avoid "inbreeding". The fear is that if Copenhagen Zoo got away with this once, they will try again, not necessarily with another giraffe but any animal born in that zoo is in danger. Thank you to Marina La Placenta and the Anti-fur Society for the following information. Please take action for Marius who was murdered this morning at Copenhagen Zoo in Denmark and butchered in front of a crowd His brutal execution was turned into a public spectacle. Ban Horse-Drawn Carriages in Chicago Collapsing while pulling carriages during summer heat waves, being forced to stand stationary in the sub-freezing, bitter cold while awaiting the next fare, being tethered to a carriage while being forced to inhale the exhaust fumes of the automobile just inches in front of them - Carriage horses are overworked in the harshest weather and most polluted conditions. There is nothing charming about this. Built for soft ground and pastures, these horses are suffering from early lameness, respiratory disease, heat prostration and spooking (which can lead to accidents and injury). "Blackfish" Killer Whales Documentary (complete film)
Film about the abuse and stress suffered by whales in captivity. Director Gabriela Cowperthwaite investigates what happens behind the scenes, and why, if most people knew the truth, we would no longer be amused by the antics these poor animals are forced to perform, or accept how these animals are kept in small confined areas for the duration of their natural life. "Blackfish - Many of us have experienced the excitement and awe of watching 8,000 pound orcas, or "killer whales," soar out of the water and fly through the air at sea parks, as if in perfect harmony with their trainers. Yet this mighty black and white mammal has many sides -- a majestic, friendly giant, seemingly eager to take trainers for a ride around the pool, yet shockingly -- and unpredictably -- able to turn on them at a moment's notice. BLACKFISH unravels the complexities of this dichotomy, employing the story of notorious performing whale Tilikum, who -- unlike any orca in the wild -- has taken the lives of several people while in captivity. So what went wrong?" "Shocking, never before seen footage and riveting interviews with trainers and experts manifest the orca's extraordinary nature, the species' cruel treatment in captivity over the last four decades and the growing disillusionment of workers who were misled and endangered by the highly profitable sea-park industry. This emotionally wrenching, tautly structured story challenges us to consider our relationship to nature and reveals how little we humans truly know about these highly intelligent, and surprisingly sentient, fellow mammals that we only think we can control." Here is what bear cubs suffer: 1. First few days are spent in the dark under an upside-down basket without food, water, or contact of any kind. 2. Tied to a post in the village where the children torment it. 3. At 6 months, a red-hot poker is forced through the bone, cartilage and nerve membrane in the top of the muzzle and a coarse rope pulled through the wound - a second piercing is necessary, usually done before the first wound has healed. 4. At less than one year of age, their teeth are knocked out with a hammer -- with no anaesthetic. Between 60% and 70% of the cubs die before they can be trained due to the punishing regime of beatings and starvation. 5. To train the bear to dance, hot coals are placed under their feet and the muzzle pain is exacerbated as the trainer pulls on the rope forcing the cub to stand upright. Under their thick collars, cuts are made to inflict more pain, thus the bears' undivided attention and complete compliance. A total of 60% to 70% of the cubs die before training. 20% from shock of separation from their mothers 20% to 40% die during transportation 20% die during early handling 40% of the remaining cubs die during their first year. http://www.change.org/petitions/ministry-of-environment-and-forests-director-ministry-of-finance-we-ask-the-indian-government-to-end-this-cruel-and-barbaric-practice?share_id=dPpzROWhMh&utm_campaign=autopublish&utm_medium=facebook&utm_source=share_petition Powered by socialditto ![]() Petition to stop cruelty to bears as pictured above - http://www.change.org/petitions/ministry-of-environment-and-forests-director-ministry-of-finance-we-ask-the-indian-government-to-end-this-cruel-and-barbaric-practice?share_id=dPpzROWhMh&utm_campaign=autopublish&utm_medium=facebook&utm_source=share_petition Animals Australia8 hours ago 49 Australian cows have suffered and died on an airplane destined for Kazakhstan. The natural habitats of the koalas are vanishing which forces many koalas to live on eucalyptus plantations. The endangered animals are slow and cannot escape the approaching harvesters. They hold on to the trees until their painful death. Loggers have recently informed Australian television broadcasting services about the slow and horrible deaths of the innocent koalas. If the animals are badly injured, they will just be left on the plantations until they die. “How often does it happen?” the journalist asks the logger. “Sometimes two koalas per hour are killed, sometimes it’s only one koala a day. And the injured animals are left out here to die”, the man answers. “We have found the animals in horrible condition. Broken limbs, impact wounds, broken backs, dead mothers with babies that are still alive and trying to survive”, says animal rights activist Tracey Wilson. Animal rescue centres are treating some of the injured koalas, but it is very rare for a company to call for help for injured animals. They do not want to be associated with dying koalas. Instead, they refer to the certification label of the ‘Forest Stewardship Council (FSC)’. In 2006 the plantations were recognised as ‘responsible forest management’. The painful death of large numbers of koalas does not seem to be as important as the profits the industry makes, says the journalist. The logs are chipped and exported to China and Japan, where they are processed in pulp and paper mills. Please help to protect the beautiful koalas with your signature. The company has mandated Deutsche Bank to organise the increase of capital in return for stock worth a total of US $ 1 billion. Coal India is not only the largest company in the world in terms of coal production, it is also one of the worst. It has forcibly displaced forest communities, destroyed critical tiger habitat and even used child labour. In Central India, thirteen new coal mines and numerous coal-fired power plants are about to be constructed. Greenpeace India has researched the effects of these construction projects on the tigers. About 1.1 million hectares of tropical rainforest and at least ten tiger sanctuaries are at stake. The environmental officer of a subsidiary of Coal India, Mr. Shinde, makes it simple: “We have to choose if we want electricity or we want tigers.” Environmentalists and locals strongly oppose the project due to its negative impact on the tigers. But how is this money used? Here we look at a couple of rehoming centres from different parts of the UK to discover how this money can benefit pets in need of help! The first of these is the Newcastle Dog & Cat Shelter, which cares for more than 3,000 lost or unwanted animals every year, and has been working for the benefit of animals since 1896. Whilst it is named a Dogs and Cats shelter, it has also provided refuge, care and love for a number of extra animals who have graced its doorstep in recent years; including guinea pigs, chickens, donkeys and even pigs! The annual costs for the shelter are close to £800,000; £50,000 of which are spent on vet’s bills which is a necessity when looking after around 250 dogs and 100-150 cats at once. Help from Support Adoption For Pets is therefore vital to the continued success of this great animal charity. A more specialised rescue centre can be found in the west of England. Greyhound Rescue West Of England (GRWE) cares for up to 80 of these wonderful pets each year, taking care of dogs of all ages. They literally go the extra mile to help greyhounds in need, just last year rescuing two Lurchers and their 9 puppies from being put to sleep at a pound in West Sussex. Their 100 volunteers also hold regular collections at Pets At Home stores and have also received a number of grant awards from Support Adoption For Pets to help them continue their valuable work caring for the dogs and their puppies. They are also running their own emergency appeal this summer, hoping to raise £10,000 for animals in need of their help. These are just two of the hundreds of rescue centres that Support Adoption For Pets help every year. Their animal fundraising events and charity drives help Pets At Home staff and their customers to support their local animal rescue centres, giving unwanted or abandoned pets across the nation a second chance at happiness. I am here today to be sentenced for my participation in releasing mink from 6 fur farms. I regret it was only 6. I'm also here today to be sentenced for my participation in the freeing of 8,000 mink from those farms. I regret it was only 8,000. It is my understanding of those 6 farms, only 2 of them have since shut down. I regret it was only 2. More than anything, I regret my restraint, because whatever damage we did to those businesses, if those farms were left standing, and if one animal was left behind, then it wasn't enough. I don't wish to validate this proceeding by begging for mercy or appealing to the conscience of the court, because I ...know if this system had a conscience I would not be here, and in my place would be all the butchers, vivisectors, and fur farmers of the world. Just as I will remain unbowed before this court- who would see me imprisoned for an act of conscience- I will also deny the fur farmers in the room the pleasure of seeing me bow down before them. To those people here whose sheds I may have visited in 1997, let me tell you directly for the first time, it was a pleasure to raid your farms, and to free those animals you held captive. It is to those animals I answer to, not you or this court. I will forever mark those nights on your property as the most rewarding experience of my life. And to those farmers or other savages who may read my words in the future and smile at my fate, just remember: We have put more of you in bankruptcy than you have put liberators in prison. Don't forget that. Let me thank everyone in the courtroom who came to support me today. It is my last wish before prison that each of you drive to a nearby fur farm tonight, tear down its fence and open every cage. That's all." ~Peter Young Please help us find this soldier's dog?!!! The terrible fate of Raja the baby elephant, chained and held hostage by an angry mob: An image that will haunt you and a story that will enrage you. In this shocking expose the Duchess of Cornwall's brother reveals how baby elephant Raja was shockingly mistreated as he was kept captive in Sumatra. Following the deforestation of the land to produce palm oil, elephants have been forced to live with humans, destroying farms, flattening houses and sometimes killing people. Villagers took Raja, and demanded compensation after his family ruined crops in the area. Article and petitions courtesy of Andres.Grijalva.Vi In all the 30 years I have been working in Asian elephant conservation, I thought I had seen it all – blatant corruption, the rape and total disregard of our beautiful planet and sickening wildlife atrocities, to name but a few. All due to the most dangerous animal of all: homo sapiens. Not much shocks me any more, but something happened in recent weeks that shook me to the core when the charity Elephant Family and the Ecologist Film Unit set out to document the environmental genocide that is out of control on the island of Sumatra, Indonesia. Sumatra is special to me because I spent a lot of time there on expeditions when I was younger. It was a paradise – vast pristine forests, intact coral reefs and abundant wildlife. All this has changed now and their elephants are the most endangered on the planet. In a single generation, the population has been cut in half, with countless other animals disappearing at breakneck speed. During the filming, a helpless, emaciated baby male elephant called Raja, who was barely a year old, was found in a village, shackled with heavy chains to a tree. He had been taken hostage by the villagers, who were demanding compensation from the Sumatran government for the damage his family had done to their crops. Can you believe that we are now living in a world where people are actually holding baby elephants to ransom? It is almost unthinkable. But just look at the photographs – look at Raja, as he strains against his chains, waving his little trunk for food and reassurance. He is bellowing in desperation for his mother. I have heard that sound of distressed calves many times in my life. It never fails to haunt me. But it is his eyes that haunt me more than anything – pleading for help – innocent, desperate and helpless. A war is being waged across Asia. In the face of relentless deforestation, elephants are being forced out of their natural habitats and they have no choice but to share their living space with humans. As the elephants’ forest home is destroyed, stressed and starving herds flee from the chainsaws straight into villages. They demolish everything in sight, trampling crops, flattening houses and often killing people. Frankly, you really cannot blame the villagers for taking such drastic steps in the sheer desperation to survive and feed their own families. Capturing a baby elephant and holding it to ransom is grisly and depressing, but it is reality as humans and elephants fight for space. People need to know why this is happening. They need to understand what is driving this madness. The cause is an innocently named product called palm oil. It’s a constituent part of almost everything that we use and consume – biscuits, margarine, ice cream, soap, shampoo. The list is endless. And the blame lies firmly with the greed of the large corporations in the East that produce it as a cash crop to fuel the insatiable consumerism of the Western world. The thirst for palm oil is apparently unquenchable and its cultivation is ripping out the last great rainforests. Although forest destruction and its lethal impact on endangered species are plain to see, palm oil is practically an invisible ingredient, listed under the generic term ‘vegetable oil’. April, Duta Palma, Sinar Mas and Sime Darby may not be household names, but these are just some of the companies producing palm oil in Indonesia and selling it on to the market for about £500 per ton. L’Occitane, Ferrero, Cadbury, Ginster’s pasties, Clover margarine, Pringles, Kellogg’s, Haribo, Nestlé and Mars are just a few of the more familiar names of those that use palm oil. All the major supermarkets use palm oil in their own-brand products. Some are better than others in getting palm oil from responsible sources, but the point is that it is everywhere and in everything. It is a silent assassin. Not until 2014 will there be a legal requirement for manufacturers to label palm oil on their products. And, to make matters worse, the only certification body to monitor the production of so-called ‘sustainable’ palm oil is immensely flawed. Consumer industries are hiding behind a fallacy. The verdant rainforest of Aceh in North Sumatra is one of the largest left in South-East Asia. It is the only place in the world where elephants, tigers, orangutans and rhinos all still live together – a real life Jungle Book. But, right now, the Aceh government is close to adopting a plan that would see hundreds of thousands of hectares of this forest opened up for the cultivation of palm oil. This ironically titled ‘Spatial Plan’ is nothing more than a deforestation plan – an extinction plan, seeking to legitimise the illegal felling that is already happening. They will become unrelenting and vast areas of land will flood. Wildlife will be forced into ever greater conflict with people, and elephants like Raja won’t stand a chance. Sadly for him, it is too late. He died alone, still chained to that tree, though Elephant Family worked tirelessly for a week to negotiate his release. Already we’ve discovered that another calf, this one just a month old, has been captured and held to ransom by local farmers. Everyone is working around the clock to make sure that this little calf survives. I am doubtful. But in the grander scheme of things there is hope. If there wasn’t hope, I would have packed up my bags a long time ago. If we can protect these forests and stop the new plan in Aceh from going ahead, then we’re taking a giant step in the right direction. Hundreds of supporters have already written to the Aceh government urging them to stop destroying their forests. But we need help. We need everyone to write. Increased knowledge of palm oil and compulsory labelling will finally allow shoppers to make informed choices about what they buy. We need to push food manufacturers and retailers to support a transformation of the industry towards genuine sustainable palm oil, and we need to do it quickly. The most useful thing we can do to help is educate ourselves and avoid buying products that contain palm oil whilst urging companies to stop destroying the rain forests. Mother Bear Kills Cub and Self to Escape Life of Bile "Milking" Article by Piper Hoffman (original post here.) A mother killed her baby and herself to end the torture of life on a bear bile farm. She hugged her cub until it suffocated, then drove her own head into a wall. Bear bile is prized in traditional Chinese medicine, and the demand for it has led to mass production. Bear farmers lock moon bears into “crush cages,” so small the bears can’t move. Then farmers puncture their gall bladders to siphon off their bile. The resulting wound stays open because farmers force needles or shunts into it so often. It becomes “susceptible to infections and diseases which can cause the animals unbearable pain,” according to the Daily Mail. Also common are broken teeth from biting on the bars of cages, painful foot conditions and even malignant tumors. This can go on for 20 years, until the bear stops producing bile and is killed. More than 12,000 bears are caged on bile farms. What A Mother Bear Knows Moon bears have large vocabularies and lots of smarts. They know what is going on. This mother reacted immediately when her cub cried of distress because farmers were puncturing its gall bladder for the first time. She broke out of her own cage and into her cub’s cage and did the only thing she could to save her baby from suffering. This story is heartbreaking, but it is also an illustration of moon bears’ intelligence. Consider what this bear had to understand to do what she did: that what the farmers were doing felt the same way to someone else as it did when they did it to her; that the farmers would keep on doing this to her baby again and again; and the nature of death — namely, that it would end everything. Consider also the depth of her devotion to her cub: she broke out of her cage, which she must have been able to do before but never did — or else she had one of those moments of super-adrenaline that allow mothers to lift cars off their children; and after she hugged her baby to death, she killed herself. The Daily Mail says she killed herself to end her torture, but she could have done that before. I think that may have been part of it, but mostly she killed herself because she had killed her cub. This moon bear isn’t the only mother trapped in a factory farm who has gone to extremes to protect her young. Veterinarian Holly Cheever tells the tale of a dairy cow she treated who had given birth four times, and had her newborn confiscated every time. The fifth time, out in pasture at night and without humans around (obviously this happened a while ago, before factory farming had adopted near-constant restraints), she had twins. This cow understood that the farmer knew she had been pregnant, that he was expecting a calf, and that he would take her calves away as he had all her previous babies. So she hatched a plan. In the morning she brought one of her calves to the farmer, so that he would be satisfied. She hid the other calf in the woods at the edge of the pasture. “Every day and every night, she stayed with her baby — the first she had been able to nurture FINALLY — and her calf nursed her dry with gusto,” Cheever relates. That gusto led to a glitch the poor mother had not anticipated. Her udder was empty every time the farmer tried to milk her. Eventually he figured things out, found the bull calf, and stole him away for a short, miserable life in a veal crate. His mother’s efforts may not have bought him that much time, but they did reveal how smart she was and how capable of love. Moon Bears and Their Bile CITES lists moon bears as one of the most critically endangered species in the world. Any trade in them or their parts is illegal. Estimates of their population vary; some estimate that in all of Asia there are only 16,000 moon bears in the wild. Many experts, including some practitioners of traditional Chinese medicine, say that there are herbal or synthetic alternatives that have the same effects as bear bile and its active ingredient, ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA). Bile farmers are producing too much bile. The market is saturated. Rather than scale down their operations, they keep the bears caged and keep suctioning fluids out of live bears’ bellies, then sell the result in the form of non-therapeutic products like shampoo. Those non-medicinal products account for half of the bile farmers sell. Please watch the above video from advocacy group Animals Asia for more information on the plight of moon bears. The following video contains some disturbing images - Video credit: Animals Asia The following article explains how our use of palm oil is causing the cruel killing of the gentle orangutan and other forest animals. http://www.saynotopalmoil.com Veganism Is The Future3 days ago http://www.saynotopalmoil.com/ ''Did you know that each and everyone of us is fueling one of the world's biggest ecological disasters and acts of primate genocide in history? Borneo and Sumatra are two of the most bio-diverse regions of the world, yet they have the longest list of endangered species. This list includes the magnificent orangutan. These two South-East Asian islands are extremely rich in life, containing around 20,000 flowering plant species, 3,000 tree species, 300,000 animal species and thousands more being discovered each year. Despite this amazing biodiversity and delicate web of species, an area the size of 300 football fields of rainforest is cleared each hour in Indonesia and Malaysia to make way for the production of one vegetable oil. That's 6 football fields destroyed each minute. This vegetable oil is called palm oil, and is found in hundreds of the everyday products, from baked goods and confectionery, to cosmetics and cleaning agents... many of which you buy in your weekly shopping. Due to the massive international demand for palm oil, palm oil plantations are rapidly replacing the rainforest habitat of the critically endangered orangutan; with over 90% of their habitat already destroyed in the last 20 years. Orangutans are some of our closest relatives, sharing approximately 97% of their DNA with humans. Orangutan means 'Person of the jungle' in the Indonesian language. It is estimated that 6 to 12 of these 'jungle people' are killed each day for palm oil. These gentle creatures are either killed in the deforestation process, when they wonder into a palm oil plantation looking for food, or in the illegal pet trade after they've been captured and kept as pets in extremely poor conditions and provided with extremely poor nutrition. Orangutans are considered as pests by the palm oil industry. In the deforestation process, workers are told that if wildlife gets in the way, they are to do whatever is necessary in order to dispose them, no matter how inhumane. Often orangutans are run over by logging machinery, beat to death, buried alive or set on fire... all in the name of palm oil. Government data has shown that over 50,000 orangutans have already died as a result of deforestation due to palm oil in the last two decades. Experts say that if this pattern of destruction and exploitation continues, these intelligent acrobats of the jungle will be extinct in the wild within 3 to 12 years (as early as 2015). It is also thought that their jungle habitat will be completely gone within 20 years (approximately 2033). Around 50 million tons of palm oil is produced annually; with almost all of that being non-sustainable palm oil, that replaces 12 million hectares of dense, bio-diverse rainforest. That's the equivalent landmass of North Korea deforested each year for palm oil alone! Palm oil is also having a shocking impact on our planet. The production of this one vegetable oil is not only responsible for polluting rivers and causing land erosion, but when the plantation workers set fire to the remaining trees, shrubs and debris to make way for the oil palms, it produces immense amount of smoke pollution that is toxic to planet earth. This has been found to be the second biggest contributor to greenhouse gas in the world. By purchasing products that contain crude palm oil, you are helping destroy ancient, pristine rainforest, wipe out species like the orangutan, and create a large-scale ecological disaster. Think of the consequences next time you do your weekly shopping; the consequences not only for orangutans and other animals, but for us as the human race; for we cannot survive without the rainforests either. We have a choice, orangutans do not.'' CCTV for ALL Slaughterhouses6 minutes ago Tail docking - the amputation of the lower half of a pig’s tail - is carried out when there is a risk of pigs biting each others tails. There is ALWAYS this risk on an intensive farm! Almost 100% of pigs killed for meat are raised on indoor units and almost 100% of indoor units tail dock. Pigs do not bite each others tails and ears in the wild. It is accepted by the pig industry that tail and ear biting are manifestations of the bad conditions of factory farms. The piglets are rarely given anaesthetic when their tails are cut and a vet does not have to be present if the amputation is carried out in the first week of the piglet's life. Remarkably, the reason for tail docking is the belief that once part of the tail is cut off, the remainder is more sensitive and pigs quickly escape when others try to bite it. This implies that the cut tail is painful. Badly performed tail docking can lead to infection which may spread to the spinal cord causing spinal abscesses and deep pain. Wounds can become infected, resulting in abscessations of the hindquarters and spinal column. Secondary infection may occur in the lungs, kidney, joints and other parts. Tail biting is caused by several factors inherent in intensive farming such as poor housing, early weaning, bad diet and build up of gases such as ammonia and carbon dioxide. It is not due to general aggression. Tooth-clipping is also widely carried out by pig farmers - including almost 100% of indoor and more than two-thirds of outdoor farms. Tooth-clipping exposes the pulp cavity and causes pain. If the teeth are cut too close to the gums, the teeth splinter and pulp infection sets in. Any farm that feels that it must undertake mutilations of animals to prevent them injuring one another has very poor management systems. http://www.viva.org.uk/campaigns/pigs/pigreport03.htm (jb) Powered by socialditto ![]() CCTV for ALL Slaughterhouses18 minutes ago Live Export Must Stop! The Bloody Dairy Industry73 days ago VEAL = DAIRY This is a male calf stolen from his mother after birth. This newborn can barely stand on his wobbly knees yet people have already planned the day of his execution. As his mother, who has a maternal instinct equivalent to that of a human mother, is crying over him, he is all alone on an auction floor to be sold to veal producers. And how much is his one and only life - that his mother would guard with her own - worth? A couple of dollars. HOW IS VEAL = DAIRY? Because the veal industry is a "by-product" of the dairy industry; that is, the veal industry exists because the dairy industry exists. Just like us, cows are mammals, and the only way they can lactate is if they give birth. To ensure cows lactate milk uninterruptedly, the dairy industry uses cows as baby-making machines by forcibly and repeatedly impregnating them on "rape racks." Approximately, half of the babies born are male. Since male calves do not lactate, the dairy industry regards them as useless so whether it is a factory dairy farm or an "organic" dairy farm, all male calves (and many female calves considered "excess") are killed. Basically, the dairy industry wants the milk but they don't want the babies that come with the milk. Another standard practice within the dairy industry is to steal all calves (male & female) from their mothers to ensure they have no access to their mothers' milk. Here is a 22-second video that shows babies being stolen from their mothers: http://tinyurl.com/c3j8w47 By not funding the dairy industry and opting for delicious dairy alternatives, you will no longer be funding the veal industry, will no longer be breaking the family unit of others and will be saving countless babies from being murdered. The mother is taken away and made pregnant again, her sole purpose is to be a breeding machine for the trophy hunting outfitter. She spends her whole life giving birth and having her cubs ripped away from her, and she never gets the chance to be a mother. Once her body is useless and can no longer have cubs she is either offered to be shot for a bargain price or just thrown in for free as part of another hunt. When the cub is taken from its mother it is sent to a petting zoo or a volunteer project, where tourists pay to interact with the cubs. This is very distressing for the cubs who have no means of getting away, cats sleep a lot and cubs especially, but they cannot do this because of been constantly picked up for photographs. Volunteers pay thousands of dollars to work on projects that promise that they will be one day released. Volunteers do not care to do any research and realise that any hand raised lion in South Africa cannot be released. These volunteers believe they are doing a good thing but they are just filling the pockets of these murderers and keeping this sick industry alive. Often the tame lion will be laid undreneath a tree and as it sees the people approach it just glances over and glances away, as it does not see people as a threat. Some of the other collared lions killed have been Grandmother, Lez and Big Boy. Leonardo was also the last adult male in the whole Hoanib & Hoaruseb region. In the end the whole pride were wiped out by humans in one year (trophy hunting and poisoning). The reading of his collar showed he was shot in a cave at around 4am, he was likely sleeping. It is also illegal to hunt at this time in Namibia but what is legal and what is not legal does not really matter any more in the trophy hunting industry, it is all immorally wrong. Tourists kill around 1000 lions each year in Africa and are driving them closer and closer to extinction, there is estimated to be only 2000 male lions left on the whole African continent. There are also around 160 lion hunting farms in South Africa with around 6000 lions where tourists pay to shoot tame hand raised lions in enclosures. Powered by socialditto ![]() Dedicated to the mystery surrounding the 2 tsunami dogs21 hours ago My Fukushima cattle story continued: While the Radiation Researchers were starting their studies and running their Radiation Research Farm, all financed by the Government of Japan; killing pens were being put into place to capture more of the cattle that had been freed by their owners. When some people tried to tell the public about these killing pens, OTHER people told the public that the stories were made up. They said that the people saying that the cattle were being killed in the pens were EXAGGERATING and making it all up. Those pens were to "hold" the cattle not to kill them. However, the initial claims about the pens being set up to kill the cattle were correct. The confusion generated by the other people made people confused as to what to believe. And, a chance to alert the public was lost. The pens were set up to let cattle enter but not leave. The pens had delicious food and water for the cattle, BUT, once the food was gone, no one replaced the food or water for the cattle. There was no shelter for the cattle, if it rained, snowed, or was excessively HOT, the cattle had no where they could go to get out of the elements. Some, already weakened by starvation, died. Others became sick exposed to the snow, rain, or heat and then died. The very young died first. There mothers could not make milk after the food was gone and every piece of vegetation had been eaten, regardless of whether it would make the cow sick or not. One of the cruelest photos shows the cattle, thirsty and hungry. Their killing pen was set up next to a pond of water that the cattle could not reach to get a drink. They were all crowded on that side of the fence, looking at the water they could not have. Some animal feeders started to bring the cattle food to eat and water to drink. They would keep doing this until the cattle finally were killed by the officials that had finally gotten around to killing them. There were people that called to complain that the cattle in the pens were being treated terribly and had no food or water. The officials ASSURED those people that the cattle were being cared for. Some people called to complain that the cattle in the pens were injured, that they had gaping wounds on their sides and why were they not being helped. Again, the officials assured them that the cattle were being helped. Then, the cattle would disappear. Killed. This practice continues. The cattle that are lured into the pens are diminishing. The Government of Japan is winning the war to eliminate the "trash" that are the Fukushima cattle. Powered by socialditto ![]() C*A*R*E ~ Children*Animal*Rescue*Effort6 days ago L'OrHéLL! Virtually all of them have been animal-tested at various stages of their development. Long before they appear on the shelves of your local supermarket, these products have gone through a long and complex testing process that leaves millions of animals mutilated, burned, poisoned and gassed in outmoded and unnecessary tests. The manufacturers of cosmetics and household products claim that they perform tests on animals to ensure the safety of their products under customary use or possible abuse when in reality it is to limit the company's liability to its customers in case of a lawsuit. It is believed that the law requires animal testing on cosmetics. This is untrue. Animal testing on cosmetics is not required by the federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act. However, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) does urge companies to conduct whatever toxicological tests are appropriate to substantiate the safety of their products. As a result, millions of rabbits and other animals continue to be the innocent victims of painful eye and skin irritancy tests. (See Animal Tests.) Toxic products that have been tested on animals such as permanent wave solutions, oven cleaners, soaps and detergents are regularly introduced into the marketplace. That's because no amount of animal testing can change the fact that many of these products are harmful if ingested or used in a way not intended by the manufacturer. Animal testing merely determines the level of toxicity. Despite the fact that they have been animal-tested, these products are no less deadly if a person eats or drinks them accidentally. Cosmetics and personal care products that are also intended to treat or prevent disease, or affect the structure or functions of the human body such as antiperspirants and fluoride toothpaste are considered drugs. These products must comply with the drug requirements of the FDA. Animals are almost always utilized as the test models. Powered by socialditto ![]() CCTV for ALL Slaughterhouses16 days ago Elephants that ''work'' in Thailand and other tourist destinations have to go through a ritual called phajaan, or “crush”. It begins with the baby elephants (usually three to four years old) being taken from their mothers and placed in a small, wooden pen. To get them securely in the pen, these babies are beaten with bamboo, sticks with nails attached to the tip and bull hooks. Once in place, the crush lasts for roughly a week. During this time, they are beaten, bludgeoned, have hooks attached to their sensitive ears, and are deprived of food and water as well as sleep, all in the name of breaking ties with their mothers and becoming domesticated. While in the crush, through the infliction of pain, they learn how to accept riders, do circus tricks and paint. This is designed to break the animal's spirit which it certainly achieves, often taking its sanity too. Used for centuries to domesticate wild elephants, this torture training method is still accepted as the only viable training method for elephant handlers and is used in almost every elephant attraction in Thailand. And, once they have their souls stomped out, they are simply vessels entertaining people. They are chained. They don’t eat enough. Like humans, elephants have the capability to form relationships and have emotions. But, not the elephants working for the tourists. People who visit Thailand — and other countries with elephant tourism — don’t realize the damage they cause these elephants when they support trekking camps, go to circuses or buy the paintings done by these creatures. Without knowing, they send a clear message to the elephant tourism industry that shows they support the torture these animals go through early in their life, as well as the horrific conditions they live in as cogs in the tourism wheel. Please never support this horrible practice, never ride an elephant. You can see these posts below. 12.3.2011 The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM) and private physicians are asking local prosecutors to stop animal abuse at Johns Hopkins University and the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Maryland. PCRM, along with Martin Wasserman, a pediatrician, and his wife Barbara, an internist, who are both graduates of Johns Hopkins’ medical school, are arguing that the use of live animals at both schools to practice surgery and other techniques not only causes unnecessary suffering, but is in violation of the state’s animal cruelty laws. The two schools are among a very small number of programs that still use live animals to teach students, as most have made the switch to simulators. According to PCRM, Johns Hopkins already has one and USUHS could use of the National Capital Area Medical Simulation Center. “Simulation is not just an alternative but better training" as well as "an opportunity to teach medical students about compassion," said Wasserman. Wasserman, who also happens to have a law degree, points out that while animals used in research are exempt from state law, it does not exempt animals who are used in surgery or who are used for students to practice on. Animals, such as pigs and gerbils, are used to teach students surgical, suturing and intubation techniques, among other things. For some reason, these schools are sticking with tradition instead of joining the majority of accredited medical school programs in the use of alternatives, while clutching the thin argument that they’re following applicable laws and guidelines. A spokesman for the state attorney's office said they received the request for an investigation and will determine what to do after they review it. Take Action Send a letter to Dean Edward D. Japan is a country that loves pets so it is no surprise that rescue groups have teamed up to help the estimated thousands of cats, dogs and other animals that were injured or left homeless after the quake. Assisting pets after a natural disaster is nothing new for Animal Refuge Kansai (ARK.) The organization which has locations in Tokyo and Osaka took in 600 animals after the Great Hanshin earthquake in 1995. Elizabeth Oliver who chairs the group said, “Here at ARK we are preparing for what might be a huge influx of animals. We already have some facilities in place and a team of experienced staff able to deal with traumatised animals. We may have to build emergency shelters as well.” Ms. Oliver explained that rescuing many of the animals will be more difficult than the previous earthquake. “The logistics of getting animals from the Tohoku/Sendai area is immense since roads and other transport links have been cut and may take time to restore. Our only means to get animals down to Osaka may be by helicopter, which was one method we used after the Kobe earthquake.” Three other rescue groups have joined together to save animals. Japan Earthquake Animal Rescue and Support is a collaboration of 3 No-Kill animal welfare organizations in Japan: HEART – Tokushima, Animal Friends Niigata and Japan Cat Network. The coalition quickly joined forces after the disaster struck. Japan Cat Network posted on their website, “We are all greatly saddened and have been continually horrified by news of the devastation, following the recent earthquake here in Japan. We, the kitties at the JCN Kansai shelter, and the shelter itself, are all fine. However, we remain very concerned about the animals in the severely affected areas who may be overlooked in the midst of so much immediate need to address human concerns. We are working with two other no-kill organizations to coordinate plans for getting animals from these areas out to safety, and have already begun helping people with pets in crisis.” Organizations outside of Japan are coming to the aid of injured and homeless pets. World Veterinary Association, a nonprofit organization that provides global veterinary care has sent a first-responder team to treat animals. The World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA) is sending their own team of veterinarians on Tuesday. Their goal is to help pets whose families can't take care of them while they are being housed in temporary emergency shelters. Dr. Ian Dacre and Dr. Damian Woodberry from WSPA are both veterans at saving animals after natural disasters. The vets also have a meeting with the Japanese Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries to save wildlife caught in the aftermath of the quake and tsunami. WSPA is coordinating their efforts with Kanagawa Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals – another Japanese based organization. And as with every disaster, heroes from the Search Dog Foundation are already on the ground with six Canine Disaster Search Teams locating people who are trapped in fallen buildings and other debris. But what about the animals? They may not be first and foremost on many people’s minds, but I can’t stop thinking about them. The Conscious Cat has collected a group of places where you can give your support to the four-legged victims, here are the recommendations: • World Vets is a non-government organization (NGO) providing veterinary aid around the globe in collaboration with animal advocacy groups, foreign governments, US and foreign military groups and veterinary professionals abroad. They are getting supplies and a first responder team ready to deploy to Japan. • The American Humane Association’s Red Star Animal Emergency Services Team is monitoring the situation closely and is reaching out to its international partners in order to provide a joint response to this global emergency. • The National Disaster Search Dog Foundation has deployed search and rescue teams to Japan. • The Animal Refuge Kansai is an organization in Kansai, Japan, that is preparing for a huge influx of animals from the disaster areas. • Japan Cat Network, together with Heart Tokushima and Animal Friends Niigata has formed Japan Animal Rescue and Support. • The Animal Miracle Network Foundation is collecting cell phones to send to volunteers helping animals in Japan. Their story begins in the 1970s, when Georgie's husband, the head-zookeeper, brought home orphaned Sally as a way to offer the animal a chance at life. Over the next two years, Georgie served as foster mother to the young chimp, hand-raising and doting on her with the affection she required. Eventually, Sally was relocated to be among her kind and the pair lost touch. Just recently, however, now 95-year-old Georgie and 38-year-old Sally had occasion to reunite -- and it seems in all that time they haven't missed a beat. Georgie, now well into her Golden Years, recently made it to Sally's home for a visit with her former ward after decades apart. Despite the fact that Sally has been residing at New Zealand's Hamilton Zoo, among other chimps for most of her life, the memories of her earliest years with her foster mother have yet to escape her mind. "She's just really lovely. She knew my voice straight away. She was up on a hill and I called out 'hey Sal' and she came bounding down," Georgie told The Waikato Times. "They are really intelligent," she added, as proud mothers are prone to do. Sally's keeper at the facility, primate specialist John Ray, says that he was "blown away" by the chimpanzee's ability to recognize her foster mother after so many years. "[To] be part of this reunion has been an incredible experience." Some might question to what extent the emotional experience of primates mirrors our own, but for those who work with chimps on a daily basis, their feelings are often as transparent as ours. "She got very excited. When she gets excited she'll do a bit of a dance, put her hands in the air, reach out to people that she wants to get closer to ... It's her happy dance, which she did when she saw Georgie," Ray told The New Zealand Herald. It could be said that the less-than-human status of primates like chimpanzees is what makes them subject to the less-than-humane treatment they experience in their ever-dwindling natural habitats -- or worse, in test labs throughout the world -- but both formal research and informal observations seem to challenge these notions of a profound difference between our species. Such realizations aren't uncommon in folks like Georgie, who opened her heart and home to an orphaned chimpanzee decades ago, or Sally for that matter as the beneficiary of this uncommon-human bond. Reflecting on the experience after being reunited with the chimp she raised for a time in the 1970s, for Georgie it seems the words and labels that divide human and animal emotions lose their footing in light of their bond -- a lesson so simply expressed by the oldest and wisest among us. "It was pretty hard to give her back," says Georgie. "She's just like a human being." Megan Drake 6/4/2011
Dog Washed out to sea for three weeks on rooftop by Tsunami reunited happily with owner! (clip posted on Animal Welfare and Info Page) Out of the rubble of earthquake- and tsunami-devastated Japan comes a happy tale! On Friday, April 1, while the search continued for survivors, a brown mixed breed dog was found floating on the roof of a house washed out to sea about one mile by the tsunami wave. It is believed the canine may have been surviving there for the past three weeks. It took the Japanese Coast Guard--aided by U.S. rescuers on the scene--several hours to rescue the pup. Initially, a helicopter lowered a man to the rooftop, but he was unable to coax the shy dog into joining him. As the helicopter started running low on fuel, the project was turned over to coast guard personnel in a nearby boat. Mission successful! The initial hope of the helicopter crew was that the dog would lead them to his humans, but none were found among the debris. Local news reported on the amazing discovery and then the unexpected happened. The dog's owners saw the broadcast and delightfully claimed their beloved dog. His name is Ban and he is two years old. The owners wish to remain anonymous. After the horrors of experiencing such a natural disaster, this story is giving hope to those searching for their loved ones. The expectation of finding many alive after three weeks is diminishing. Ban's special rescue warms the heart.
