Eyes of innocence. In the 80's animal protectors sprayed seals with red paint to prevent hunters killing them for fur. Time to adopt this strategy again...

TRUE STORY: A flock of sheep in the UK proved their problem-solving prowess when they were discovered crossing a hoof-proof cattle grid by rolling over it. The mischievous flock were using this ingenious technique to reach tastier grass and flowers on the other side. Check out more amazing facts and stories about sheep here: www.bit.ly/16pp5t2 Despite their intelligence and capacity to suffer, in Australia, these gentle animals routinely have pieces cut off their bodies without pain relief. If that doesn't sit right with you, join thousands of others who are taking part in the public consultation on sheep standards! Pelorus Jack, the dolphin. Pelorus Jack, a Risso’s dolphin (uncommon in New Zealand) that accompanied ships travelling between Wellington and Nelson, was the first dolphin in the world to be protected by law.First noticed in 1888 when he joined a steamer bound for Nelson, Pelorus Jack spent the next 24 years escorting boats from Pelorus Sound to treacherous French Pass. As soon as he heard a ship coming, Pelorus Jack would rush to it and leap into the air. The excited crew would shout when they saw him, knowing that they would be safely led through the dangerous waters. His guidance was so valued that a government edict was issued to protect him. One day a drunken man aboard a ship called the" Penguin" shot Pelorus Jack, and the dolphin was presumed dead.Months later he returned and continued to aid ships. But whenever the" Penguin" came by Pelorus Jack would not help it. Pelorus Jack continued to aid ships for many years, all but the Penguin which sank in 1909, all 75 people aboard drowned. Mystery surrounds Pelorus Jack’s death. The dolphin was at least 24 years old, and probably died of old age.The legend of Pelorus Jack lived on after his death.

The moose whisperer: How an animal lover became friends with Jack the giant moose. Vanessa has nurtured Jack since he was three days old, Playing tag and run, and taking walks, Vanessa and Jack are inseperable. Gentle giant Jack doesn't let other people talk to Vanessa when he is around, preferring to keep her all to himself. 'Many people do not understand my relationship with him. I want everyone to know that my relationship with Jack is very special and extremely unique,' said Vanessa 'I truly respect Jack's power and strength, and trust my intuition. 'Because of our continuous interaction as he grew up, Jack and I have formed a lasting friendship and a lifelong bond. 'He's a good boy and reacts to my emotions. He knows when I have a bad day and always does something to cheer me up.' 'When I first met Jack, he was about 25 lbs, three days old, had a gnarly bite mark on his right hip, and a complete fracture above his right front knee. 'I was told he had a 20% chance of surviving. He was laying in my lap with his head on my chest. I was attached to him the moment I first saw him. 'His mother had abandoned him, but I wouldn't'. 'As I grew attached to him, he also grew attached to me'. <3 Source - Daily Mail 13/2/12

Brave dog gets false limbs after drug dealers chopped off his paws Crossbreed Pay de Limon — which means lemon pie in English — was found bleeding in a rubbish dumpster after the thugs practized torture techniques on him. Horrified residents in Fresnillo, Mexico City, gave him first aid and managed to rush him to a vet at Milagros Caninos, an association that rehabilitates dogs that have suffered extreme abuse. After months of love and affection, Lemon Pie is now walking again after the shelter raised £3,500 to pay for prosthetic limbs. “Pay de Limon had the misfortune of running into an organised crime group and they used him to practise cutting off each one of his (front) paws, like they do when they cut fingers off human beings that have been kidnapped.” Lemon Pie's prosthetic limbs were made by a company in the United States. Mary, the seeing eye cow. Fate Magazine reported that a Reverend O. F. Robertson of Hartsville,Tennessee, had a seeing-eye cow. The cow in question Mary - became aware that the Reverend's eyesight was failing and began nudging him around the hilly farmland with her nose, making sure he didn't bump into things. As his eyesight worsened, Mary's diligence increased until she would accompany the Reverend whenever he went.Eventually almost totally blind, he depended on Mary the cow as his only help and until his death, the two could be seen making the rounds together, Mary steering him along the countryside.

Morris the cat. In 1968 an orange cat was about to be destroyed at an animal shelter in Chicago , in the last twenty minutes of life he was discovered by show business people. When Morris went to the casting call for the 9Lives commercial, “He jumped on the table… and he walked right up to the art director, the big cheese, and bumped him in the head, and then Morris just sat back,” The art director said, ‘This is the Clark Gable of cats.’” Morris became the world's most famous cat, thanks to cat food commercials.Until his death in 1978 he lived a life of luxury and had armed guards to protect him from catnappers. There have been three different cats who have played the famed "Morris the Cat, all cats to play Morris have been rescues, either coming from an animal shelter or a cat rescue.

Remembering Darika - This stunningly beautiful girl had her life cut short in July 2007 when she disappeared into the wildlife trade. I look at my hands knowing they touched her in life, they shake at knowing what happened in her death... Instead of recounting her fate, I have attached one of my favourite poems to her photograph. Her gentle soul and beautiful face will be with me forever. RIP dear gentle Darika xoxo Sybelle <3

Bait dog brought back from the brink through kindness and love. When Oogy was four months old and weighed thirty five pounds he was tied to a stake and used as bait dog in dog fighting. The left side of his face from just behind his eye was torn off, including his ear. A family took their sick 14 year old cat that was not going to recover to the hospital for a last visit. Oogy was at the same hospital.Life goes out one door and in another. ‘This is one of the happiest dogs I’ve ever met’ Dr. Bianco said. ‘I can’t imagine what he’d be like if half his face hadn’t been ripped off.’ Given what Oogy endured and what he is bred for, people are constantly astonished that he loves animals and people as much as he does. He has to meet everyone. Was he conscious when the police put him on a rubber sheet and took him to the Ardmore Animal Hospital? Oogy went to sleep in a world of terror and searing pain and awoke surrounded by angels in white coats who were kind to him, who stroked him gently and talked softly to him. Instead of people who baited and beat and kicked him, he was surrounded with healing mercies. I realized then that Oogy probably did not know he had not died and gone to heaven. So I told him. I said, ‘Listen pal. It only gets better after this.’ Book about Oogy: http://www.amazon.com/Oogy-Only-Family-Could-Love/dp/0446546313/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top/185-8513699-4906851

Oogy is a beautiful, gentle Pit Bull. Don't believe the media hype about Pit Bulls. Most of them are adorable, sweet and loving. (I know, I had a Pit Bull mix for eighteen years who was so sweet-natured, she let other animals eat her food, and her best friends were cats. In fact, she seemed to believe she was a cat!) Don't blame dog breeds; blame cruel, or irresponsible, dog owners.

On this photo, two inseparable friends, ten-year-old Sadie the Jack Russell terrier and eight-month-old Anuska the vixen enjoy a play fight. “Orphan fox cub Anuska has been learning acrobatic moves from her new best friend, Sadie the Jack Russell. (Click on the link below to see the photos) They're happy to engage in rough and tumble, and even spring into the air to catch a ball, just like any pair of playful dogs. The vixen, Anuska, was orphaned days after her birth when her mother was run over by a car. But fortunately Sadie the terrier was on hand – or should that be paw? – to fill the gap. The two have become inseparable, and even go out on walks together with their owner, art teacher Brian Bevan, who says that eight-month-old Anuska has become as obsessed with catching balls as ten-year-old Sadie.” More Photos: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2107078/The-fox-hound-Meet-unlikely-friends-Sadie-Jack-Russell-Anuska-orphan-cub--whos-learnt-dog-tricks.html#ixzz24L1uVKWr

A Bear Adopted by a Loving Family.<3 Recently, a young sloth bear accidentally followed a herd of goats into Lakhapada, India where he made friends with the Kisan family. They fed him, played with him, generally tended to him, and kept him around like your ordinary family pet… until wildlife officials arrived earlier today to remove the cub to a more sensible habitat. But these wonderful people will keep the memory of this amazing friendship. <3 More beautiful photos: http://twentytwowords.com/2012/08/17/young-bear-wanders-into-town-becomes-a-temporary-family-pet-4-pictures/

Cristina, s soldier took him to her home and took care of him and he recovered, A fireman saw him running on the beach and thought that Turco had the skills of a rescue dog. Cristina agreed to let them test Turco to be a rescue dog even though it was hard for her.Turco passed all the tests and became a rescue dog. The rescue group of Valladolid took Turco to Haiti with them after the earthquake. Turco managed to save the lives of 18 people, including a 2 year old child. The Beautiful Story of a Friendship. On May 9, 2007 in the mountains of northern Albania, a wolf was captured and put in a pen. To feed him, his captors decided to give him a "live food", an old donkey who, exploited for many years by its owners, had become worthless. But what happened? The two became best friends. Their amazing story became public and 12.000 people had written to the government of Albania asking that the life of donkey be spared and the wolf released to the wild. Even the Albanian television covered the story and under the huge pressure of the public, they finally let both of them free. The articles says also that the donkey lives now happily on a green pasture and that the wolf would even pass by sometimes to visit him ❤ ♥ http://write-andride.blogspot.com/2012/04/wolf-and-donkey-modern-parable.html http://regionbuzz.com/Europe/Albania/---12042012

This baby chimpanze was adopted by a mother bull mastiff, who treats him as one of her puppies. <3 Endearingly, the chimp soon seemed to think he was a puppy himself, bending double to eat from food bowls with his adoptive siblings. The puppies were also great to play with – and particularly good when the abandoned baby wanted a cuddle. More photos: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2172570/Chimp-adopted-bull-mastiff.html

That man raised bulls for bullfighting, but this bull didn't know. He just knew that this man was kind to him. He used to follow him like a dog would do and one day he tried to hug him and play. That thay both their lives changed. He stopped being part of the bullfighting business.

Deaf Boy in Shanty Town Rescues Burned Homeless Dog One day in a line of about 200 very poor people who had brought their animals to be tended and cured by the vets there was a small boy, deaf and unable to speak, who used sign language to tell us we needed to see something urgently. He disappeared and returned with a small, cold, miserable puppy covered in an angry, itchy mange and with a nasty, festering wound caused by scalding water, probably thrown at him to scare him away from market stands. He was completely abandoned, except for his faithful human friend. The vet treated and dressed his burn and treated his mange. . A kindhearted neighbor agreed to care for him. Every week he was back in the line with the small boy, who wasn’t letting us leave until ‘his’ dog, now named Milo, was cured. Today, Milo is making the most of the life he so nearly lost. Healthy, happy and homed close to the small child who refused to let poverty and physical limitations stop him from saving a life, and helped us to turn Milo’s suffering into happiness. The small boy has a family. However, he lives in an extremely poor community and in a country where there are no free services of any value for children with his difficulties. We always see him on our programs because he brings us strays. Here, half of all school-age children do not go to school because the parents cannot afford it, so he is one more of many. The animals of the poor are often ill-cared simply for lack of information and money. We teach above all, but provide services at prices most can pay for, even if only bit by bit. . Anyone who wishes to make a donation to help the animals in Peru’s shanty towns may do so here.https://secure.qgiv.com/for/?key=MRLAUFK2ATEBWUW3DUN1

A Connecticut man purchased a 17-pound lobster at a Waterford restaurant, then released the crustacean back into Long Island Sound. The Lobster would have to be about 80-years-old to reach his current size and he felt it deserved to live. It takes seven years for him to even become a lobster big enough to keep," MacKenzie said. "For a lobster to live this long and avoid lobster traps, nets, lobster pots ... he doesn't deserve a bib and butter." He took the lobster back to sea Tuesday, releasing it in a secret location, where he said it would be almost impossible for fishermen to drag their nets. MacKenzie received a send-off from a group of children chanting "Let Larry Live" and the lobster was given a salute from the Niantic River Bridge operator who sounded the lift bridge's siren as the boat carrying it headed to sea. <3 It would be great if one day Lobster would be omitted from the menu -lets hope this story has a ripple effect for the sake of other Lobsters destined for the pot.<3 Source - nydailynews.com Image - Alex Nunes/The Day of New London/via AP

Even simple tasks used to be fraught with difficulty for Fraser Booth. The four-year-old, who is autistic, easily became overwhelmed by everyday events, resulting in tears and temper tantrums. Then Billy the stray cat came along. Abandoned by his previous owner and rescued from a boarded-up council house by a charity, he had not had the easiest start to life. But since their first meeting, Fraser and Billy have been inseparable – and the moggy has helped bring the little boy out of his shell. Now, whether it’s playtime, storytime or bedtime, Billy is there to offer a reassuring paw. And he is the first to sense when Fraser is getting frustrated, calming him down with a cuddle or comforting purr. Fraser’s mother Louise said: ‘If Fraser is around or playing in the garden, Billy is never far away. It is like he is watching Fraser and calming his behaviour. He always appears when Fraser is getting upset and offers his head close to Fraser’s to reassure him and recently, when Fraser was poorly, Billy sat on his lap all day. ‘They say animals can sense things, but Billy seems to know before anybody else if Fraser is going to get upset. <3 Read more: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2160079/How-love-Billy-stray-cat-finally-brought-year-old-autistic-boy-shell.html#ixzz222a34eli

A vertical cliff, a playful lion cub. Any mother would think this is a terrible combination. And that’s what wildlife photographer Jean-Francois Largot, captured in his pictures — the agony of a lion cub and his risky rescue in Kenya’s Masai Mara game reserve. The little animal had been dragged into the mouth of a ravine, and was clinging to the walls with all his might, crying and crying for help. Lion Mom, a lion and another lioness showed up at the edge of the precipice to assess the situation. The females descended a bit but were soon overwhelmed by the steepness. This special mom risked everything by slowly going down the cliff to reach the terrified son, trying to hold on to the crumbling walls. One slip could the the end of them –falling deeper into the ravine, down an abyss. But fortunately mom arrived before the lion cub reached the end of his strength, and snatched him up in her jaws With.amazing technique and power, the lioness climbed up the walls, with her baby secured in her mouth. Minutes later, she dropped the little lion on the ground — safe at last! — and gave the frightened creature a consoling lick on the head.

Photographer Michel Denis captured this amazing picture on safari in Kenya :O He was astounded by what he saw: "These brothers have been living together since they left their mother at about 18 months old, On the morning he saw them, they seemed not to be hungry, walking quickly but stopping sometimes to play together. 'At one point, they met a group of impala who ran away.. But one youngster was not quick enough and the brothers caught it easily'." Then extraordinary scenes followed; they just walked away without hurting him.

Publishers Note: In regards to the article above, I would also suggest storing extra water (bottled water, or large bought water containers often last up to two years - check the use by date) and extra food. Often when people set up their packs "just in case" of a natural disaster, they store enough food and water for themselves, but forget the needs of their pets. For those with cats, you might also want a few extra bags of cat litter, so your cat will not need to go outside to do its business; and for dog's, have a stack of old newspapers so they can do the same. With any food or water put in storage, it is advisable to have a rotation system in place. That way you do not waste anything you have bought. Use up the food and water before it goes off and replace it with new on a regular basis, possibly every six months.
